In Progress....

Still working on these placemats. Got the quilting done in the center panels and outline stitched each and every little piece around the edges. Could I have picked a more time consuming pattern??? Between the pieced edges and now the beveled and mitred binding -- I have one thing to say, @$!@#!@#$^.

I'm also working on a 10x12 Van Gogh inspired Iris threadpainting as a special request from a friend. I've gotten the base painted and have laid on most of the threadpainting. I just have to complete the black outline and bind. I think the next one I do will be Starry Night. I saw a technique demonstrated once on Simply Quilts wherein you slice up little bits of fabric into skinny little slivers and use them to paint the surface of your design, securing the slivers when you are done with tulle and quilting. I think the very nature of Van Gogh's impressionistic brush strokes on that one will lend itself perfectly to the "sliver" technique.
Has anyone ever tried this technique or something similar? I'd love to hear from you if you have. I'm tempted to try this one on a really large scale -- but am leaning toward trying a tiny one to begin with and, if successful maybe doing something like 24x36 which is "large scale" for me.

  4. Cathie...you are doing a beautiful job! Time consuming, %$!?#$!&#!%, you are too funny! Keep pursuing Miss Cathie, you will prevail!

Lucky friend to receive your iris! It looks stunning...as is!

Is the show you saw on Simply Quilts the one with the beautiful oriental lady doing the little tiny bits covered in black tulle and they were the trees in the forest??? THAT was one of the most GORGEOUS pieces I've seen! Along with a few others...like Ryan McKenna, etc. Is this the one you are talking about?

I haven't tried it, but it sure is tempting! That sounds fun! It reminds me of doing a mosaic but instead of glass or tile...it's fabric! You Art Quilt Pusher YOU!!! ;-))

  6. Cathie, I just got my copy of The Masters: Art Quilters, and Noriko Endo was one of the forty featured artists. Almost all her quilts were landscapes, but I don't know why her technique would not work beautifully for Van Gogh.

She was on the Confetti Naturescapes episode, QLT-1128, on Simply Quilts. I have been wanting to try this, also.

  9. The technique of slivers under tulle sounds similar to the collage technique I use with scraps that I call "ortwork" (orts being the British term for scraps). I stack the backing, batting, and background fabric before arranging the bits and pieces. You'll find it all easier to work with if you give a light spray of Sulky Temporary Adhesive to your background fabric. I also adhere the backing and batting together with it. I also spray the under side of the tulle before placing it over the finished composition. Pin all the layers together and you're ready to machine quilt. Have fun!

It is a great subject for what you would do with thread...
