I attended a Cloth Book Workshop
at Cloth Studio this past weekend in Asheville.
It was there that I got my first taste
of book making and binding.
No scissors were used in the making of this journal!
Everything was hand torn - for a softer, organic feel.
No batting or interfacing was used either.
Four pieces of hand torn muslin were inserted
between the front and inside cover - to add gentle, soft, stability.
The signatures were wrapped in hand made paper
and hand stitched to the cover using a "pamphlet stitch"
executed in fine hand waxed Irish Linen.
The process was made even more satisfying,
by the fact that I used only fabrics I hand dyed
and tea stained myself -
and the design of the book is totally original.
The finishing touch of my book - a beautiful hand carved natural material button
I found at a lovely little fiber shop in downtown Asheville
called Earth Guild.
Perfect!
